Amrita Chowdhury from Kolkata writes to Kolahal Travel Guide Date of visit: May 16, 2016 - May 20, 2016 We arrived at Digha Tourist Lodge by a Volvo bus from Kolkata. Digha tourist lodge is some 10 minutes walk from the beach. But one problem is that the Lodge is reached only after a steep walk, which is difficult for old people. I have difficulty in climbing stairs. So if the back door entrance (they have one) is kept a bit uncluttered it can be used. I used the same as I had no option. But it was dirty, and also lots of bricks and sand on the way. Also, even to reach a ground floor room you have to climb stairs. So if there is a ramp it would help. The Room and bathroom were clean. But the wall had damp. We were not impacted as it wasn't rainy season. The AC in the room worked properly but water droplets from it kept the centre table moist everyday. The staff were polite and quiet. The food we got on the first day we reached was actually horrible, stale, cold, fish wasn't fresh. The first day impression of food was so bad that we were sceptical to order until it rained badly one night and we had to order. However we had a dinner of khichuri later which was good. The oil used for the puris in morning isn't good or reused badly, coz twice we had problems. |

The front office, room service and restaurant staff, all were very good and polite. We arrived from Kolkata by chair car train to Digha. Overall our stay at Digha Tourist Lodge was very memorable. We shall come and stay longer in our next visit. |

Satarupa Sarkar from Kolkata writes to Kolahal Travel Guide Dates of visit: June 3, 2014 - June 5, 2014 It was really a nice experience for me and my family in Digha Tourist Lodge. The rooms are really spacious and all rooms have an attached balcony. The rooms are front facing and give a nice view of the garden. The lodge is very well maintained and provides a calm and quiet atmosphere. Even though it is not located on the beach, a view of the sea is available from the sea facing balcony of the first and second floors. Located from the hustle and bustle of the town, it is a perfect place for visitors who want to enjoy the beauty of the sea shore amidst its silence. However, the food is very basic and has to be preordered. Bed tea and evening tea is available only if it is asked for. Evening snacks are available within a particular time. There is no thali system during lunch and breakfast. The food is a little expensive though tasty. The service at the dining table is sometimes delayed. Overall it is a place to be relied upon. With a little adjustment here and there, we enjoyed our stay in Digha Tourist Lodge and would definitely look forward to visit again next time. |

Goutam Mitra writes: Last Friday (1st of June, 2008) we traveled to Digha without a hotel reservation. We just got up and drove to Digha, which is about 200 KMs from Kolkata. To our utter surprise we found all better hotels are full and especially A.C. rooms were just not available. They were all booked!!! The better private hotels were charging premium on room rent and the behaviour of the reception was totally changed. All this was because they were running to full capacity! The sweltering heat at Kolkata was driving people out to go to the beaches. We looked for a room in about 12 or 13 hotels in Old & New Digha. They were all full. Then we decided to visit West Bengal Tourism's Digha Tourist Lodge. We had never gone there as it was govt. run and we had thought the service and rooms would be horrible. To our surprise we found the reception was extremely warm, rooms were spacious (at least 18' X 18'). The size of their 2 bathrooms would make the complete room in other better hotels. Wall to wall carpet, and AC was working. The rates? extremely reasonable. For a ground floor AC room we were charged Rs.700/- plus tax. In other hotels a room would be half the size and the rate would not be less than Rs 1200 or Rs 1500 plus tax per day (plus bad behaviour for free). In other words, our stay was extremely comfortable in Digha Tourist Lodge, which we had underestimated. It is advisable to book a room well in advance during summer vacation (April end to mid June) of schools. As this place is now very well connected with Calcutta, it can be reached within 3 to 4 hours of drive and within equal time by train. So it remains crowded on weekends and holidays. Unique Qualities: This place has a huge lawn, garden, stroll area, big rooms, big toilets, well made beds, good behaviour of the hotel staff members and so on. But every thing requires to be re-touched, re-painted. The restaurant & bar needs renovation, furniture needs to be polished, changed. In all it should be handed over to some professional who would make this place look good, feel good. I feel nobody would mind if the rates are increased about 10 to 15% to pay for better facilities. It is required as it was built in the 1960s to 1970s (when the crowd was fewer in number and the journey took 8-10 hours), with minor renovation from time to time. But now it requires to be renovated completely to give it at least a two star category look. Our room charge was Rs. 800/- or about USD 18 per day. A second floor room is Rs 1000/- or USD 22 per day inclusive of taxes. And frankly speaking these are extremely good rates for the kind of room and service you get. |
